This Special Edition reinterprets a defining artwork from Pelikan’s early visual heritage and transforms it into a contemporary writing instrument. At the heart of this edition lies Georg Tippel’s 1899 poster Grundfarben, created for Pelikan’s first poster competition. The artwork reflects the close relationship between art and commerce at the dawn of modern advertising. The works produced for these competitions form the basis of the Pelikan Art Collection, preserving a unique cultural legacy while reinterpreting historic artistic expressions for a new generation of collectors and writers. For this edition, a subtle yet expressive detail from Tippel’s original poster defines the design. The flowing cloud formations from the sky of the 1899 artwork have been reimagined as an abstract, rhythmic pattern across the decorative sleeve of the fountain pen. Softly contoured shapes interact with light to create depth, movement and a delicate shimmering effect. Framed by semi-transparent warm brown resin components, the design harmoniously bridges historic artwork and contemporary craftsmanship. Crafted using the sophisticated Aurora process, the barrel features finely engraved guilloche structures beneath multiple layers of lacquer, resulting in a luminous surface that enhances the visual presence of the motif. In Grundfarben, Tippel depicts the pelican as a nurturing parent caring for its young—a symbol rooted in historical legend and long associated with devotion, responsibility and trust. For Pelikan, this imagery reflects a core philosophy: care for customers, partners and future generations. Through form, colour and composition, Tippel transformed a commercial poster into an image of enduring meaning.
