Bindweed Fairy – Design Inspiration
The unmistakable illustrations of Cicely Mary Barker (1895–1973) have delighted adults and children for over a century. Since the first publication of her Flower Fairies in 1923, Barker’s work has continued to captivate readers with its childlike wonder, inspired by nature, botany, and her own imagination.
Barker’s art reflects the whimsy and elegance of the Art Nouveau aesthetic, combined with the precision and fine detail reminiscent of the Pre-Raphaelites. Her Flower Fairies emerged during the Victorian fascination with fairies, portraying mischievous yet harmless creatures who care for the natural world while enjoying playful adventures.
Each fairy was carefully matched to a flower, and Barker’s attention to detail, along with her botanical accuracy, lends a poetic sense of truth to their existence. She even used students from her sister’s kindergarten as models for the fairies, combining realism and romanticism in a way that continues to enchant audiences today.
Cicely Mary Barker passed away in 1973 at the age of 77, leaving behind a legacy of art and poetry that continues to be celebrated. The illustration featured on this pencil case, The White Bindweed Fairy, comes from her Fairies of the Wayside collection. This reproduction is made with permission from Frederick Warne & Co Ltd., allowing new generations to enjoy the timeless charm of Barker’s Flower Fairies.
