Sophora is a deciduous broad-leaved tree of the Fabaceae family. In China, three pine trees were planted during the Tang Dynasty to signify the positions of the three princes (Taishi, Taifu, and Taibao), who were high-ranking officials in the imperial court, and ever since, they have been considered to symbolize authority and career advancement.
It was brought to Japan as a medicinal tree around the time of the introduction of Buddhism, and as the character ``Sogo\'\' indicates, it is an auspicious tree that was carved into masks and placed at demon gates to ward off evil spirits. Later, the word ``enju\'\' was applied to this tree, and it has been prized as a ``tree that brings happiness\'\' and is said to be blessed with longevity and safe childbirth.
