The Namiki Yukari Milky Way Raden Maki-e Fountain Pen is an extraordinary expression of Japanese artistry, capturing the mysterious beauty of the night sky through traditional lacquer techniques. Introduced in November 2016, this exceptional writing instrument transforms the vastness of the Milky Way into an intricate composition of shimmering stars, celestial constellations and iridescent mother-of-pearl, creating a miniature masterpiece of Japanese decorative art.
Created by Namiki's highly skilled Maki-e artisans, including Michifumi, Misa and Yutaka, the Milky Way combines two of Japan's most sophisticated decorative techniques: Togidashi Maki-e and Raden. These traditional methods require extraordinary patience, precision and artistic expertise, with multiple stages of lacquer application, decoration, drying and polishing extending over several months.
The Togidashi Maki-e technique, also known as Burnished Maki-e, involves applying decorative elements and metallic powders onto layers of traditional Japanese urushi lacquer. The artwork is subsequently covered with additional lacquer and meticulously polished to reveal the design beneath. This demanding process creates a remarkably smooth surface with exceptional visual depth, allowing the celestial imagery to appear suspended within the lacquer.
The Raden technique introduces another dimension of beauty through carefully selected pieces of mother-of-pearl. These delicate shell fragments are incorporated into the lacquered surface, reflecting changing colors as light moves across the pen. Their natural iridescence recreates the captivating brilliance of distant stars, contrasting beautifully with the deep black urushi background.
The celestial composition includes the constellations Lyra and Aquila, together with Vega, one of the brightest stars in the night sky. The combination of gold decoration, delicate star patterns and luminous mother-of-pearl creates an elegant representation of the Milky Way, with each element carefully positioned to evoke the depth and mystery of the cosmos.
The pen features a traditional lacquered metal body with elegant gold-colored appointments, providing a refined balance between visual sophistication and everyday usability. As part of the prestigious Namiki Yukari Collection, it offers proportions designed to be comfortable for regular writing while preserving the intricate artistic details associated with the finest Japanese lacquerware.
At the heart of the Yukari Milky Way is Namiki's renowned No.10 nib, crafted from 18-karat gold. Carefully finished and tuned by Namiki's specialists, the nib provides the smooth, precise and consistent writing performance for which Japanese fountain pens are celebrated. Available in Fine, Medium and Broad widths, it offers a refined writing experience to suit different personal preferences.
The pen uses a cartridge/converter filling system, combining the convenience of Pilot ink cartridges with the flexibility of bottled fountain pen inks. A Pilot CON-70 converter is included, allowing the owner to enjoy a wide selection of inks while maintaining the practicality of a modern filling system.
Namiki's exceptional reputation is rooted in a tradition of Japanese craftsmanship dating back to the early twentieth century. Through the work of its celebrated Kokkokai artisans, the company continues to preserve and develop techniques such as Maki-e, Raden and Urushi, transforming writing instruments into remarkable examples of functional art.
