About the inspiring book Things to Make, by Archibald Williams (UK, 1918). Originally published in 1918, this is a surprising book filled with things for both children and grown-ups to make. In the preface, Williams encourages readers to \'use their hands\', remarking that \'he who is able to make things for himself will always have an advantage over the person to whom the use of tools is an unprobed mystery\'. The project selection runs from simple objects to more complicated artifacts, emphasising the manual skills acquired over the things made. The book contains construction notes and technical drawings describing how to make a shed for your bicycle, kites, a house ladder, a tool cabinet, an electric alarm clock, a model electric railway, quick boiling kettles, wrestling puppets and a hot air engine, among many others. Archibald Williams (1871–1934) was an English technical journalist and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
