Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749–1832) is considered the greatest poet, writer, and dramatist in German literature, as well as an influential natural philosopher. His works, from The Sorrows of Young Werther to Faust, profoundly shaped Romanticism and European thought.
Faust, Goethe’s magnum opus, reimagines the medieval tale of Doctor Faustus as a deeply human exploration of morality, knowledge, and the search for meaning. A tragic play in two parts, it was Goethe’s lifelong project, from his youth until his final years.
This Paperblanks edition reproduces a handwritten dialogue between Faust and Mephistopheles from Goethe’s manuscript of Faust, Part II. The back cover features Julius Nisle’s engraving of the two characters.
Goethe has previously appeared in the Embellished Manuscripts Collection with reproductions of his Italian travel journal, a letter from Friedrich von Schiller, and Franz Schubert’s musical adaptation of Erlkonig. This Faust edition proudly continues his legacy within the Paperblanks collection.
