Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) was one of the great post-Impressionist painters. After moving to the town of Arles in 1888, he began experimenting with still life pieces, which he called “colour studies.” We are honoured to partner with the Barnes Foundation to bring one of Van Gogh’s finest still life artworks to our collection.

About This Design
Original Art: Still Life (Nature morte), oil on canvas by Vincent van Gogh
Era: 1888
Region: Arles, France
Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890), one of history’s most influential painters, was known for his bold colours and expressive brushwork, shaping the rise of expressionism.
- In February 1888, Van Gogh moved to Arles, southern France, where he produced over 200 paintings and 100 drawings in just 15 months.
- His art during this period became brighter, focusing on nature: olive groves, wheat fields, and flowers.
- He often considered his still life works as “colour studies,” experimenting with vibrant combinations.
The artwork reproduced on this cover, Still Life (Nature morte) (May 1888), features:
- A blue majolica vase with painted decoration
- Vibrant blue and yellow flowers
- A white teacup, also seen in other works from the same period
This edition is produced in collaboration with the Barnes Foundation (Philadelphia), which houses an esteemed collection of Van Gogh’s works.
