Original Art: Textile design by William Kilburn
Era: Late 1700s
Region: England
Design Inspiration: “Anemone”
The floral design showcases the botanical art of Irish illustrator William Kilburn (1745–1818). Known for his watercolours in Flora Londinensis and for his work as a calico designer, Kilburn created flowing patterns that preceded William Morris by nearly a century. His most admired works use seaweed motifs blending anemone, coral and moss forms, one of which he presented to Queen Charlotte.
Although celebrated in his time, Kilburn’s designs were widely copied. His efforts to defend textile copyright helped shape protections for later artists, though he ultimately lost the legal battles and died in 1818. Reviving this pattern honours his legacy, seen today in modern wallpaper, the Arts & Crafts movement and contemporary copyright law.
