This design reproduces a 17th-century star chart by Dutch engraver and publisher Frederik de Wit. Populated with zodiacal creatures and vivid decorative elements, De Wit’s maps combined scientific precision with artistic beauty. His celestial planisphere not only delighted art lovers but also served as an essential navigational and scientific tool for seafarers and astronomers.
The chart also includes six diagrams of different conceptions of the universe, notably featuring the Copernican heliocentric theory.
To celebrate 25 years of Paperblanks, this design revisits the Early Cartography series first introduced in 1994. That original series reproduced masterpieces from the Dutch Golden Age — a period marked by flourishing trade, exploration, science, and art.
By re-releasing these designs, Paperblanks honours both the artistry of 17th-century mapmakers and its own history of creating notebooks that are “as useful as they are beautiful.”
